Patient Question: What are drafting pencils? or.. How are they different from regular pencils? Are they recommended?
Staff Advice:
Hello and I'm from the Hospital. I'm here to answer your questions!
Drafting pencils are pencils of different consistancies. A lot dont have erasers (the mark, once drawn, is hard to erase anyways) They are mainly used for shading, realistic drawings, or landscaping. Personally, I dont reccomend them. (The softer ones smear and if you get finger oils on them, you have no chance in hell of erasing it....not like you had much of a chance anyways XD ) But if you are into the three categories I said, you should try them, they might help, they might not
drafting pencils are not only woodcase/soft lead/eraserless pencils. depending on the person referring to the pencil or brand of said pencil, a drafting pencil could mean a leadholder/clutch type, the mechanical pencils with lead hardness windows and lengthened lead sleeve at the tip for stencil/ruler use, or lumograph woodcase type.
as long as you have a comfortable pencil with a lead hardness you like, its all good. make sure to also have a good standalone eraser-i prefer vinyl-it works really well on all lead hardnesses with minimal 'crumbs'.
experiment with different lead hardnesses and pencils, whether woodcase, mechanical or lead holder, and see what suits you hand and style best.
