About GIMP

From http://www.gimp.org/about/introduction.html:

GIMP is an acronym for GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed program for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring.

It has many capabilities. It can be used as a simple paint program, an expert quality photo retouching program, an online batch processing system, a mass production image renderer, an image format converter, etc.

GIMP is expandable and extensible. It is designed to be augmented with plug-ins and extensions to do just about anything. The advanced scripting interface allows everything from the simplest task to the most complex image manipulation procedures to be easily scripted.

GIMP is written and developed under X11 on UNIX platforms. But basically the same code also runs on MS Windows and Mac OS X.

GIMP for Beginners

Basic GIMP Tutorial Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, and Part 4 by Aeon-Borealis
-This tutorial is going to encompass how to ink (outline) and perform basic coloring and shading in GIMP. The first part is mainly for introducing the tools that are going to be used. These are only basic descriptions of the tools and where to find them; more about what they do and how they will be used will be covered in the next few parts.

:star: GIMP tutorial - as good as PS by pralinkova-princezna
-My first proper tutorial! I so enjoyed making it. There are not many GIMP tutorials here, definitely not as many as for Photoshop, and this program is still underrated. I want to advertise it as a tool equal to Photoshop.

The tutorial covers these areas of digital drawing:
:bulletgreen: inking
:bulletblue: colouring
:bulletpurple: shading (with the use of Levels)
:bulletred: text adjustments

Tutorial: How to paint folds by pralinkova-princezna

Basic shading reference by pralinkova-princezna

Intro to GIMP Tutorial Part I, Part II and Part III: Cell Shading by Surreallity
-Warning: HUGE File. I got this crazy idea in my head that my art was good enough to try and create a tutorial to help others. I decided to use GIMP because it's my favourite art program and I'm sick of the crap on the BC board that free programs can't do anything. If you have any questions free to ask, I'l try to answer. Hope you find this useful.

GIMP Beginner's Tutorial by Zephyr-Aryn
-I realized that GIMP is not the easiest thing to use, at least initially. (It took me forever to learn how to color under the lines rather than avoid them all because they'd get erased.) So....I made this geared towards the extreme beginner. You can use the basics I gave you here to customize how you want to find your tools. Enjoy!

GIMP: Basic Emoticon Animation by Deviant-Footballer
~Alright, my first tutorial! I hope I covered everything decently. It covers basic emoticon animation in the GIMP

A few things to note--

:bulletred: I want to give credit to whoever made the tutorial where I found the (replace) hint. I can't find it again, but whoever posted it is awesome!
:bulletred: If ever I make another tutorial, I will try to have less words and more screenshots. Yeah...
:bulletred: visibilty of layers only involves visibilty in the process of making. Whether the layers are visible or not, they will be in the final animation.
:bulletred: With that being said, make sure you delete the base layer (or whatever you want to call it) so it doesn't interrupt the animation!
:bulletred: EXPERIMENT! Play around! Be fearless! The best way to learn new things is to butcher stuff first! I MEAN *AHEM* it's okay to deviate from this way or the "standard" way of making emoticons (if there is such a thing as a standard way lol).
:bulletred: I'm NOT an emoticonist. I just get ideas and inspirations from the world around me and from the awesome pixel artists and emoticonists on deviantart!
:bulletred: If you have any questions, feel free to ask; can't guarantee that I will have the answer. If not, I could look into it, or you could ask any of the emoticonists of DA! They're very friendly and will surely answer your question!
:bulletred: If an emoticonist happens to see this.... um.... Feel free to correct me or add something to this. I'm not an emoticonist, or a pixel artist, I'm just setting a basis. I like coming up with things in my spare time. So......

I've seen a few times (combine) typed at the end of layers, if anyone has information about that, feel free to share!

Thank you. Hope this helps. Good luck!

Gimp Animation Mini Tutorial by princess-phoenix
-I was requested to make an animation tutorial for GIMP and so I decided to give it a try. I know there are tutorials like this already on DA, but one more wouldn't hurt I guess?

It's a mini tutorial, it doesn't show everything, but it is something you can use to get the basics down. This is also the first real tutorial I've ever made, so any helpful comments and critiques are welcome! Also feel free to point out mistakes and such, no one here wanted to proof read it for me. T_T

.GIF Animation Tutorial by recursiveLoop
-If you're interested in making animations like this one: [link] , please take a look at this tutorial.

Click download to get the full tutorial pdf. The tutorial itself is 7 pages, but I've included lots of images to hep illustrate the process. If you use this tutorial please let me know what you think! It's the first tutorial I've ever written, so any suggestions on improving it would be great.

The .gif format is the most widely supported type of animated image. It's not as resource-heavy as flash animation, but of course it lacks the interactive capabilities of flash. These .gif animations can be easily viewed using Mozilla Firefox, and can be inserted into a webpage just as easily as a .jpg, without fear that someone won't be able to see it. These points make knowing how to create animated .gif's very useful.

Please note that this tutorial is written for the GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP) version 2.6. If you don't have GIMP already and you want to follow this tutorial as is, visit [link] This program is an open source project, and as such is freely available for most operating systems. While the techniques detailed here will translate to other programs like Photoshop, the tools available and menu structures are different, so the specific steps probably won't make sense.

Hello, I am a new user of GIMP and I am having an issue.

I have added a new layer to a picture so I can draw on it, however I can't draw or paint or do anything on the layer, the tool settings are fine, opacity is on, there is no lock on the layer, but for some reason it won't let me...

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks :)
