Basic Assignments-manga

Manga characters are made of basic geometric shapes, the more you know how to put those together in your mind, the better you will be able to draw them.

A good practice to drawing better manga characters is with still life.

1. Draw an egg with all angle, under a single light source.

The egg shape represent the basic shape of the face, once you get the egg shape down and you are able to imagine it in your mind in all angle, you are one step closer being able to do manga face in all angles.

2. Then draw a cone or triangle like shape in all different angles. If you can't find those, get a mug, with handle, and draw it in all different angles

NOTICE

As of July 31st 2009, Portalgraphics is discontinuing their English sales and (eventually) English email support of openCanvas. (See a copy of the announcement here.) They are reportedly working on a new program called Sketchbox.

openCanvas is still available on CD as CGIllust 4.5.

openCanvas Description:
openCanvas is a drawing program made by PortalGraphics. It supports layers and tablet use. openCanvas has a unique "playback" feature allowing users to save and share event files; this means you can watch the process of a drawing from start to finish if you have the event file. Unlike openCanvas 1.1, commercial releases of openCanvas (or oC) cannot network.

A free trial version of the last English commercial release of openCanvas can be downloaded here.

-A DeviantArt community devoted to OpenCanvas. Unfortunately it's been inactive for many weeks, but it seems like some of the members keep an eye on the place, so you can often get help by leaving a comment. Also, people can add tutorial links by simply commenting on the community's OpenCanvas resource deviations, so the resources can still be "updated," sort of.

openCanvas English sales and support have apparently resumed. The English website is back up.

OpenCanvas is such a nice program but it looks like Portalgraphics.net is cutting the English side of their business. If you are an English OpenCanvas user, buy any upgrades you need/want now before it goes off the market, though I'm sure as long as your serial is valid it will keep working well after the cut off date on English sales/support.
