Hey guys, this may be a silly question, but do you keep a sketchbook? Many of you probably do (at least a collection of paper that you have sketches on). Perhaps this is where your most immediate ideas go down, maybe you develop characters, or even sketch from life! But do you plan out compositions in sketch format, or do you just go right at it and attack your painting or drawing? If you do the latter, you should consider the best ways to plan out your drawings compositionally =) Just taking 15 or 20 minutes to sketch out the whole thing can help you work out problems or change things before you get to the final project, it will also help you have more confidence as your skills develop! Here are some things to consider when you are sketching:

balance
rhythm
pattern
repetition
hierarchy
and emphasis

Those things will help you create interesting and engaging finished drawings or paintings:)

Here are some tutorials that are supreme for getting some great compositions made:

For me, it's an on and off kind of thing. When I visualized something, not just the character but also the background, I started sketching with the character first with the best pose that suits with the background. when I'm done with the character, then I could start with the background.

But if it's just characters, then I'd go straight ahead without thinking and if I'm not satisfied, i'll either stop at the moment and continue it after some time or I'll completely abandon it. It really depends on my mood.

Actually, I think it depends on the artist's motivation, perseverance and imagination on the certain subject.
